Cambodia Leadership & Social Impact Retreat
RAW Impact × About my Brain Institute | 2017
What began as a pro bono partnership with Cambodian not-for-profit RAW Impact grew into a six-year relationship spanning my work with Billy Blue College of Design - Torrens University and About my Brain Institute. RAW Impact works with communities in Cambodia to improve living conditions and create opportunities for families in need. I first worked with the organisation in 2011 through live student projects at Billy Blue College, with the partnership later evolving into an international leadership and social impact initiative through About my Brain Institute.
In 2017, I designed and co-delivered a leadership retreat in Cambodia with RAW Impact founder Troy Roberts and his team, bringing together 30+ leadership professionals and coaches. The group raised more than AUD $50,000 towards a housing project for a local family and participated directly in the build, alongside a leadership program and documentary production capturing RAW Impact’s work on the ground.
My role spanned the development of the partnership through to the strategy, production and delivery of the retreat, including:
Partnership Development:
Developed a six-year pro bono relationship with RAW Impact spanning Billy Blue College of Design and About my Brain Institute, connecting design education, leadership development and social impact.
Retreat Strategy & Production:
Conceived and delivered the 2017 Cambodia retreat, bringing together 30+ leadership professionals and coaches for an immersive experience combining leadership development with direct community contribution.
Stakeholder Coordination:
Worked closely with RAW Impact founder Troy Roberts and his team to align the retreat program, participant experience, community project and on-the-ground delivery.
Fundraising & Community Project:
Led fundraising initiatives with the group, raising more than AUD $50,000 toward building a home for a Cambodian family in need and supporting RAW Impact’s work.
Participant Experience & Logistics:
Coordinated the end-to-end retreat experience, including participant communications, program planning, travel-related logistics and integration of the leadership and community-building components.
Documentary Production:
Led an eight-person production crew on location in Cambodia to document RAW Impact’s work, interview Troy Roberts and capture the retreat and community project. The footage was subsequently incorporated into the Make Me A Leader Documentary.
Education & Earlier Partnership:
As a lecturer at Billy Blue College of Design, developed and led live student briefs with RAW Impact as the industry partner, giving students the opportunity to create branding and concepts for initiatives that RAW Impact could further develop in Cambodia. In 2012, I travelled to Cambodia on a field trip to document RAW Impact’s work and operations firsthand, bringing those insights and materials back into the classroom to inform future student projects.
